The Final Chapter

Writer: Ann EstvoldAnn Estvold

Buongiorno (good day) from Italy. This week was spent exploring Rome, visiting Pompeii, and the long journey home. On Monday, we woke up early and headed to the train station to get your train to Naples. After arriving in Naples, we caught another train to Pompeii. We had a quick lunch of sandwiches and headed into the site for our tour. This was my second time in Pompeii as I had gone early in the program, and we saw most of the same things as I had seen the first time. After the tour we had some pizza before heading back to Rome. Tuesday was the last day in Rome and was spent exploring the city. We started the morning by going to the Trevi Fountain where we watched them clean out all of the money that had been thrown in the day before. After watching the fountain for a while, we headed to the Victor Emmanuel Monument to see the view from the top. We had pizza for lunch before heading to our tour. After lunch we took a tour of the Church of Santa Maria della Concezione, where the bone chapels are located. We then headed out to the catacombs with our tour group and explored those before heading to the park of the aqueducts. We got to see some of the ancient Roman aqueducts that supplied water to the city. That night we walked around the historical city center before getting dinner at Abbuzzi, which is known for their carbonara.

We woke up the next day and cleaned up the Air BnB a bit before calling a taxi and heading to the airport. At the airport we checked our bags and headed to security, getting food at KFC for lunch. We then boarded our flight to Amsterdam. After landing in Amsterdam, we quickly walked to our next gate to get on our connecting flight. The flight from Amsterdam to Minneapolis was eight hours long and I watched movie for the entire flight. After arriving in Minneapolis, we went through customs and then got some food before going to our gate for our Fargo flight. We arrived in Fargo around 12:30 am and picked up our bags. We drove home that night arriving around 3:30 am (10:30 am Rome time) and went to bed.

Over the past four months I have visited ten countries: Italy, Vatican City, Greece, France, Luxembourg, United Kingdom, Ireland, Bulgaria, Germany, and Austria. I also visited multiple places in Italy both for classes and on my own. These included Naples and Pompeii, Bologna and Ravenna, Florence, Assisi, Subiaco and Monte Cassino, as well as Venice, Padua, and Milan. One of my favorite places that we visited for class was Ostia, Rome’s ancient port city, which was similar to Pompeii but does not have the same number of tourists. I am super grateful for my study abroad experience and am grateful to all of you for following along. This is not the end, just a new chapter.

Ciao, Ann
